Welcome to Brighter Futures!

Brighter Futures is an innovative clinic that provides occupational therapy treatment for children from birth to 21. Brighter Futures specializes in sensory integration therapy and utilizes suspended equipment and multisensory activities for treatment sessions. All occupational therapists are sensory integration certified and provide one-to-one treatment, individualized to meet the child's needs.

 Vestibular: Unifying system for all of sensory processing helping a child           become aware of their body position and movement in space

  • Craves movement?

  • Fearful of movement?

  • Wags head?

  • Watches moving objects such as 

        fans, and spinning toys?

  • Spins self or runs in large circles?

  • Flicks fingers in front of eyes?

 

 Proprioceptive: Input through muscles and joints that help an individual   become aware of their body in space

  • Butts head against objects?

  • Bangs head?

  • Bites self or others?

  • Grinds / clenches teeth?

  • Slaps or hits self?

  • Bites objects?

  • Walks on toes?

  • Flaps hands, claps, jumps, and/or, hops to an unusual degree?

  • Enjoys firm hugs?

  • Falls or crashes on purpose?

  • Unusual vocal expressions such as growling or screaching?

 

 Tactile: Under or over reacting to touch, pain, or temperature

  • Dislikes nail cutting and/or hair cutting/combing/washing?

  • Dislikes tags in clothing?

  • Dislikes clothing textures? 

  • Indicates distress when barefoot or

        always prefers wearing shoes?

  • Picky eater, difficulty with textures?

  • Prefers being held or cuddled on their

        own terms?

  • Tends not to feel pain as much as others or overreactes to pain?

  • Doesn't want to have messy hands, face, or clothing?

 

Auditory: How a child processes incoming sound and plans speech

  • Difficulty responding to their name?

  • Difficulty following 1-2 step directions?

  • Tries to escape from noisy environments?

 

 

 Visual: How a child perceives space and orients themselves to that space

  • Avoids eye contact with others?

  • Looks at shiny or bright lights?

  • Difficulty tracking objects with their eyes?

  • Difficulty with depth perception?

 

 

  Motor Planning: Ability to plan and carry out unfamiliar actions 

  • Bumps into objects?

  • Difficulty jumping with two feet?

  • Difficulty catching / throwing / kicking a ball?

  • Falls or trips often?

  • Difficulty with handwriting?

  • Breaks pencil lead frequently or writes with

       heavy or light pressure?

  • Tends to lean on arms or slumps at desk?

 

 

 Attention and Self Regulation: Ability to stay on task and    modulate emotions appropriately

  • Strong outbursts of emotion predictable or unpredicatable?

  • Becomes upset when routine is changed?

  • Difficulty calming down after active play?

  • Overly active?

  • Difficulty with transitions (activities/places/people)?

  • Difficulty focusing attention, over-focused, or unable to shift focus to the next task?

  • Doesn't sleep through the night, waking often?
